About the Journal

Journal of Ecologies is an interdisciplinary, blind-reviewed publication dedicated to original research on ecological relations across diverse social, cultural, political, and environmental contexts. Rather than viewing ecology solely through environmental or technical perspectives, the journal recognizes ecology as relational, encompassing the interconnected dynamics of communities, governance, knowledge systems, and more-than-human worlds. The journal adopts an interdisciplinary approach, integrating perspectives from Human Ecology, Anthropology, Sociology, Geography, Political Ecology, Environmental Humanities, and related fields.

It welcomes contributions that examine ecological relations across a wide range of settings, including Indigenous and place-based contexts, policy and institutional environments, as well as emerging areas such as digital ecologies, narrative ecologies, and multispecies relations. Journal of Ecologies encourages scholarship that is both empirically grounded and theoretically informed, contributing to critical discussions on ecological change, sustainability, justice, and regenerative futures.

Journal of Ecologies invites scholars, researchers, practitioners, activists, and critical thinkers to submit manuscripts for consideration as Research Articles or Book Reviews for Volume 1, Issue 1, scheduled for publication in November 2026. The editorial team seeks to publish six Research Articles and one Book Review that advance original theoretical insights, empirical findings, or critical perspectives on ecological relations across diverse contexts.

Aims and Scope

Journal of Ecologies is an interdisciplinary, blind-reviewed journal that advances the study of ecologies as plural, lived, and relational processes across diverse global social, cultural, and political contexts. The journal adopts a plural understanding of ecologies, recognising that relations between humans, more-than-human worlds, and environments are shaped by distinct histories, value systems, and ways of life.

Journal of Ecologies provides a platform for scholarship that engages with ecological relations as dynamic and situated processes rather than as fixed or purely technical systems. It welcomes work that explores how these relations are formed, negotiated, and reconfigured through everyday practices, community-based initiatives, institutional arrangements, and broader socio-political transformations.

While Journal of Ecologies maintains a particular interest in Indigenous and place-based ecological practices, it does not treat these as bounded or isolated domains. Instead, it invites contributions that examine how diverse ecological perspectives intersect, interact, and at times come into tension with scientific approaches, policy frameworks, and development interventions.

Indexing

Journal of Ecologies is currently in the process of obtaining its ISSN/E-ISSN and preparing for the publication of its inaugural issue. Upon publication, all articles will be assigned a registered Crossref DOI to ensure persistent article identification and citation tracking. Following the publication of the first issue, the editorial team will progressively apply for inclusion in PKP Index, GARUDA (Garba Rujukan Digital), Google Scholar, Dimensions, and Index Copernicus International. Applications for DOAJ and SINTA accreditation will be submitted in accordance with Indonesian journal regulations and the eligibility requirements of each indexing service once the journal has established a consistent publication record. As a long-term strategic objective, the journal is also committed to pursuing inclusion in premier international databases, including Scopus, once high-tier national accreditation and international publication standards are firmly established.

All articles published from the inaugural issue onward will contribute to the journal's publication history for future SINTA accreditation and international indexing. Subject to the policies of each indexing database, previously published articles may be included retroactively once the journal is successfully accredited and indexed. The journal is committed to maintaining a rigorous blind-review process, high standards of scholarly publishing, publication ethics aligned with COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines, and transparent editorial management from its very first issue.

Our Core Philosophy

Plural Worlds. We recognize that ecological realities are shaped by diverse histories, cultures, knowledge systems, and ways of living. The journal embraces epistemological plurality and welcomes multiple ways of knowing and engaging with ecological relations.
Relational Ecologies. Ecology is understood as a web of relationships among humans, more-than-human beings, institutions, technologies, and places. We encourage scholarship that foregrounds care, reciprocity, interdependence, and the everyday practices through which ecological relations are sustained and transformed.
Productive Encounters. We view encounters between different ecological perspectives — whether through collaboration, translation, or contestation — as opportunities for dialogue and critical inquiry. Rather than seeking a single ecological framework, the journal values these interactions as pathways for generating new understandings of ecological coexistence and sustainability.
Justice and Regenerative Futures. The journal promotes scholarship that bridges Indigenous, local, and scientific knowledge while critically engaging with governance, policy, and socio-political processes. We support research that advances ecological justice, ethical coexistence, and regenerative futures across diverse contexts.

The journal encourages contributions in areas including, but not limited to:

Human–environment relations and political ecologies
Indigenous, place-based, and relational ecological practices
More-than-human relations, multispecies worlds, and environmental lifeworlds
Regenerative approaches to land, food systems, and biodiversity
Food sovereignty, seed systems, and community resilience in ecological contexts
Gender, care, and the everyday practices that sustain ecological life
Community governance, policy processes, and institutional dynamics in ecological contexts
Law, recognition, and the politics of Indigenous rights
Public discourse, policy critique, and global governance in ecological contexts
Social movements, resistance, and ecological struggles
Critical perspectives on sustainability, extractivism, and development
Digital, affective, and narrative dimensions of ecological relations
Memory, culture, and representation in ecological worlds
Knowledge systems, epistemologies, and the ethics of ecological transformation

We welcome submissions that are empirically grounded and theoretically engaged, as well as work that draws on participatory, practice-based, and transdisciplinary approaches. Contributions may employ qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods, provided they offer clear and rigorous insights into the processes under study.

By bringing together a plurality of perspectives, Journal of Ecologies contributes to broader scholarly conversations on how ecological relations are shaped, contested, and reconfigured, and how pathways of social transformation toward more just and regenerative futures emerge across diverse contexts.

Types of Contributions

Journal of Ecologies welcomes submissions in the following categories:

Research Articles: maximum 8,000 words, including references.
Book Reviews: maximum 4,000 words.

This publication cycle is not organized around a special theme. Authors are encouraged to submit original work that aligns with the journal's aims and scope while addressing contemporary issues in peace, conflict, gender, and social transformation.

Authors are encouraged to submit their manuscripts before the deadline whenever possible. Earlier submissions will proceed through editorial screening and peer review sooner, allowing sufficient time for revisions requested by reviewers.

Review Process

Each manuscript will be subject to:

Initial editorial screening;
Blind review by independent experts; and
Final editorial evaluation based on scholarly merit.

Review criteria include originality, conceptual clarity, methodological quality, analytical contribution, and relevance to the journal's focus on peace and gender.

Submission Requirements

Authors should submit:

An original manuscript that has not been published or submitted elsewhere;
A complete manuscript by 1 September 2026;
A manuscript prepared according to the journal's author guidelines;
Manuscripts should be written in English and submitted in Microsoft Word (.docx) format.

Publication Fees

In this volume, Journal of Ecologies does not charge any article processing charges (APCs) or submission fees. Submission, review, and publication are provided at no cost to authors.
